One thing I've noticed as of late is my wedding/engagement rings are extremely large on me and I'm terrified of losing them. I got married this past November...and they fit snugly. Now they're slipping off everywhere.

My question is....has anyone had to resize rings yet? And if so, to what extent? A half size, full size or more?

I stopped at a jeweler last nite while in the mall and they sized my finger which is already a half size smaller. The options they gave me were either yarn the back of them to place them securely, leave 'em in my jewelry box until resized or a ring guard which inevitably bites into the gold with time. I'm opting for a little yarn as I hate to be without my rings.

Also...I can't resize my wedding band I found out It's two-tone and it also has an inscription inside. Hubby is more than willing to buy me a new one once I know what size....but it still isn't the same.

Hey, Darlin.

I see some possibilities here on the wedding band front.

Since your dh is willing to get you a new one in a smaller size, go for it. But then, that one will get too big, so you'll need another one ... see where I'm goin with this?

By the time you hit goal you'll have enough rings that you can string'em into a necklace!

... then go for one of those nice eternity bands when you reach your final ring size.

(I've given away a lot of rings that got too big for me as time went on. Still have a box of those that are too expensive or sentimental to give away and not easily resizable for one reason or another. I look at them sometimes. Maybe I'll make them into Christmas tree ornaments or something someday. ehhh.)

Knowles, go to the jewelry dept. at Walmart. Ask the clerk at the jewelry counter to show you where the ring guards are located. I bought mine on a spin rack, they are like thick plastic tubing cut into small chunks. They are split on one side so you can slide it on the back of your ring. I'm thinking that about three different sizes comes in one package. One package may offer like small and med. guards and the other one is large & XL, somthing like that.

kumus, that is a neat idea! Mine have gotten too large also, and are almost at the point of sliding over my knuckle. I don't want new ones either.. so that is a great possibility.

In my opinion, it doesn't matter so much WHAT you decide to do about the loose rings as that you do SOMETHING and do it right away. I lost a ring that was precious to me because I couldn't decide what would be the best way to deal with the sizing issue, so I procrastinated till one day the ring was simply gone.

A good way to size rings with inscriptions, or when you're not sure what the ultimate size will be, is to have a couple tiny gold beads soldered onto the inside of the ring. They can be placed off to the sides so the engraving isn't affected, and they allow some for the fluctuations we all seem to have in our fingers. They work really well, and the beads can be replaced with larger ones down the road if necessary. It costs about $15, and any jeweler should be able to do it.

The ring quards Kumus mentioned also work well and are inexpensive. But again, whatever you're gonna do, DO IT. Go put some yarn on that thing RIGHT NOW!!

I'm already well aware of the emotions around losing sentimental jewelery. My first marriage, I lost my entire wedding set (band and engagement ring with diamonds) on my one year wedding anniversary. Maybe I should have listened to fate then!!

knowles - At my heaviest, my ring size was a 9 - my wedding band (with inscription)and engagement rings are a 6. I just don't feel comfortable walking around without wearing some sort of wedding band, so I would buy cheap gold bands (usually about $50) as I lost weight. The cool part is, you can usually sell them back (or pawn 'em) when you are finished). When you hit about 20 pounds above goal, then you can get the super special forever wedding band. I know that your current band is very special to you (I NEVER take my wedding band off) - plan to have your new band(s) blessed and that will make them special, too.

The ring guards Kumus mentioned work great for waiting out size variations.....

....but does anyone else remember back in the "old" days if we were going steady and had our boyfriend's class ring, we'd slowly drip candle wax on the inside of the back of the ring, building and smoothing it to fit our proud little hand?? For all of however many weeks the big crush lasted, anyway. How times have changed! LOL!

Brenda, the one I remember is the angora yarn, all fuzzy and soft! Wax, hmmm, that's really interesting.
