OK I have said this before, but,

When I gave up diet sodas, I used chamomile tea with 3 splendas as a substitute. After a few days, I kept noticing that I was constantly getting hungry right after a cup of tea. I kept telling myself that it was all in my head. There is no way that splenda could be doing that to me. Then I learned how much dextrose it had. I gave up tea in the begining of January.

Looking back on it now, I think I was experiencing a sugar high from the dextrose. I thought that I was experiencing the "relaxing" effects of chamomile, and used that as a justification to keep drinking it.

Anyway I really appreciate having this information. I have to admit, I have become a bit afraid of splenda due to my past experiences. I know you said that you were a "worst case scenario", but if I will definitely ues it less frequently.

Paladin, ya know, chamomile is also an appetite stimulant. Back when I had my Herb Shoppe, my step-daughter's child was having a problem with eating, no appetite. So I had her make her Chamomile tea. It did help get her to eat more. Poor little thing was soooooooo skinny. So it wasn't in your head. And splenda MAY not have been the culprit. It might have contributed, but I'll betcha it was mostly the tea. Chamomile is also a wonderful sedative, calms the nerves. If I can't sleep, I always make a cup of chamomile. Oh the wonders of herbs....

Ok. I wanted to see how the sugar free hershey's dark chocolate would affect me. The label claims *for 5 pieces* total carb 24g, fiber 3g, sugars 0g, and lactitol 19g. Obviously those numbers are a little off.

Anyway, I had 2 pieces, and here's how it went:
4:50pm 76mg/dl
ate 2 pieces
5:20pm 80mg/dl
6:20pm 78mg/dl
7:20pm 86mg/dl

This will be a safe and occasional treat for me when I'm craving chocolate and nothing else will do.

Well, I'm tardy getting in on this one. I had no idea from the title of this thread that it was a blood sugar testing thread

Could y'all fill me in on the parameters of this? What is "acceptable" as far as a BG reading goes?

So, what I get is (at least for Maggie and Tara):

Erithritol is ok
Lactitol is ok
Liquid splenda (ie. DaVincis) is ok
Powdered splenda is something to be used sparingly

Have you tested stevia (I'm particularly interested in SteviaPlus, of course!)

Now that I know what this is, I'll be watching it! I wish I could join you, but I feel a bit like Rob...

Blessings!

I am, too, Sandy. I was close enough to "borderline" that my md was persuaded not to hang the label on me if I could "turn it around."

He gave me six months. I've been in remission for five years. If you're taking any anti-glycemic meds, be sure to put them in your post, since they will surely change your response.

Sharron, you're right, but I never gave it a thought. I think I'll see if I can change the name of this thread ... to something that says what it's about, LOL!

OK, and now you are going to tell me what those BG readings signify and what is acceptable??? Right?

Blessings!

Well, I think there are going to be individual differences. We're not doing this under completely controlled conditions. Some (but certainly not all) of us are borderline or "in remission" type 2's. Each of us will have differences in metabolism, etc. ect.

But, for myself, anything that rockets my blood sugar 30 points in a half hour is something I approach with care. Not necessarily something I wouldn't use at all. Remember, we're using equivalents to a GTT, which is a pretty hefty dose of stuff, and with nothing to buffer it's absorption.

Once I know what something does in a serious challenge to my BG/insulin, I feel it gives me a better idea of how I will use it. For instance, I wouldn't hesitate to use one packet of splenda in a cup of tea or a smoothie, but if I'm making some kind of sweet goodie - and adding maybe some other ingredients - something that I might be tempted to eat a bit more than would be sensible , I'd go with the zero carb, or davinci syrup for sweetening, since I know my BG response to that is flat. Then I only have to "worry" about what else I'm putting into it.

I don't think we're going to give a "safe" number, but I think we're going to be able to give a SENSE of the glycemic index (but not the glycemic load - see prior paragraphs here) of the various sweeteners.

Clear as mud?

HOW on EARTH did I miss this thread???

What was the original name of this topic? This is fantastic!

Actually, I'm kinda ticked that y'all didn't include ME in this little experiment... since I'm testing my bg's 5 TIMES A DAY ALREADY!!!
But, better late than never...

I am also a type II diabetic (2.5 years) and I'm almost 34 weeks pregnant. The pregnancy has caused my fasting bg's to go from the mid-90's to (on average) 109-113. It has also made me WAY more sensitive to carbs and sugar.
I have never had a strong reaction (1 or 2 hours post-prandial) to Splenda when it was IN something, but I have never tested it alone...

This is all very interesting and informative. Thanks to you guinea pigs for sharing your experiences with us!

Summer

Well, the topic was sort of addressed to me, since I guess I raised some interest with my erythritol experiments back on the old board, and I'm always talking about what various food items do to my BGL. and then I never thought about it untill Sharron pointed out how the topic didn't really explain to people what we were doing here. LOL!

Join in ... but maybe later, since you probably wouldn't want to be doing one of those "whey low" kind of products while you're pregnant. Couple of them and your md would be trying to force feed you glucophage or something.
