I'm not even sure what to call this product. I know the yuckky kind is called "sugar free."

I'm guessing the name of this product is "1 Carb" ???. I don't know. Here's a bar I just scanned. You decide what the name is.

I have the old, yukky, lactitol kind sitting right in front of me here and it's simply called "Hershey's Dark Chocolate Candy - SUGAR FREE" The new ones can be found at Walgreens. I spotted them at the checkout and bought one. It was DELICIOUS!!!!!! And I only got a little gassy from it and NOT the screaming meemies. And yes, they make really good "chips" to put onto LC ice cream. I just wish they would use this recipe now to make real chocolate chips that we could spike our almond cookies with. It has possibilities if it will melt well and can be slathered onto cookies, etc. Being a chocloholic myself, I am thrilled to see your BG results Maggie, thanks for posting that!!!! There is also another bar out called Perfection made by Advant Edge. It is also sweetened with erythritol and splenda!!!! They are quite tasty little morsels too!!!! I wonder if they would melt okay to be used on nut clusters.

... Barb, it melts fine! How do I know this? Like an idiot, I took the bar out of my scanner and sat it on top of the monitor.

Fortunately, the wrapper remained intact, but inside was liquid chocolate which squished out through a slit I made in exactly the form I'd expect ... I'm thinkin about strawberries here ....

hmmmm.....

Maggie, thank you for taking time to post your results and review. I will certainly be on the lookout for these. I'm thinking a just melt it in the pkg., snip a small hole and drizzle on LC cheesecake or whatever.

I will keep my distance most of the time, as I have a tendency to be a choc-o-holic.

Thanks to Rave for testing!

I have a question for this thread's participants - does eating a sweetened LC product (Atkins bar) cause headaches for any of you?

I hadn't really been experimenting on myself, but after looking at this thread and having consumed a bar today and yesterday with a headache following each, I am wondering if the sweetner is to blame.

I don't really have cravings for sweets, but use them as a supplement of sorts when I am out of choices. It won't be difficult to give them up, though.

Thanks!

Funny you should mention that, Suzanne. I had pretty much given up anything with aspartame in it to try to avoid stalls. So a couple weeks ago, I got a diet pepsi and got the worst headache that lasted all day. Nothing, I mean nothing, would get rid of it. Didn't think much of it till I had a small amount of diet coke the next day and the same thing happened all over again. As far as the sugar alcohols or splenda, no headache from those. Whey low gave me a wicked headache...spiked/crashed my blood sugar something fierce.

I tried a candy with erythritol yesterday. I had no tummy reactions, no headache, no reaction whatsoever. It was called Carbs In Line. I got both the mint and the Almond Roca. I only had the Almond Roca, kids and dh had mint. Dh said the mint was too strong, though my son liked it.

Thanks so much for being "guinnea pigs" for the good of us here at LCE

I don't get headaches from any of it (that I know of, but I haven't been watching for it either. I will have to start.) I am REALLY liking the erythritol chocolates. I was a chocoholic in my non-LC past, so having a chocolae treat every now and then is wonderful. Although, if I eat a WHOLE chocolate bar, I do pay for it later, intestinally speaking, ahem.

Somebody mentioned polyglycitol in the Hershey's bar, so I looked it up on an industrial site with an absurdly long URL.

---- pasting-----------

SYNONYMS: Hydrogenated starchhydrolysate, polyglucitol.

DEFINITION: A mixture consisting mainlyof maltitol and sorbitol and lesser amountsof hydrogenated oligo and polysaccharidesand maltotriitol. Manufactured by thecatalytic hydrogenation of a mixtureconsisting of glucose, maltose, and higherglucose polymers; typically supplied as asyrup; may also be dried and supplied as asolid product.

ASSAY: Not less than 99.0% of totalhydrogenated saccharides on the anhydrousbasis and not more than 50.0% of maltitoland not more than 20.0% of sorbitol onthe anhydrous basis.

DESCRIPTION: Colorless and odorless, clearviscous liquids or white crystalline masses.

FUNCTIONAL USES: Sweetener, humectant, texturizer, stabilizer, bulking agent

---- unpaste ----

To summarize, it's a mixture of maltitol and sorbitol with some other polyols, although in not very strictly defined proportions. So, yes, there is some maltitol in the Hershey's bars.

Did my own sloppy little test with the erythritol. This was about two months ago, now. Morning fasting was 88. Chugged the Erythritol in warm water. About 30-40 minutes later, it was 97.

I would like to do more experiments before drawing conclusions, but the test monitor doesn't belong to me. (It was borrowed from my stingy brother.) Plus, I'm a wuss.

One thing that bothers me in some of the test results posted is that we don't have much information on what the normal blood glucose pattern is for the individual involved.

In other words, it would be nice to get some baselines, which is what I was hoping for. For instance, I had a 9 point rise in half an hour during my erythritol test. Could that be from the erythritol or could it just be from the excitement of stabbing my finger in the morning? I don't know yet. And one baseline isn't always that helpful -- it's even better to have an average of many tests.

My own conclusions about erythritol: I don't know!

I think I've noticed one thing. Whenever I have used my erythritol, it seems like I balloon with water weight within the next 24 hours. I have not fallen out of ketosis from it. So what is going on there? I honestly don't know, but it gives me the CREEPS. I've decided to stay away from it for now and let the other guinea pigs out there come to a consensus before I play with it again.

Strange things have been happening with me, lately. I've experienced some large and sudden gains and losses of water weight. I don't weigh myself, so I judge this by how my clothes fit and how my flabby wattles expand and contract. (Hey, lose enough weight and you'll have wattles too, heh.) I don't know what's going on with that. I'm speculating that it might just be that my body has become hyper-sensitized to small amounts of carbs.

OK...here it is, a small, unscientific look at what Dreamfield's Pasta does to my blood sugar levels.

I should mention that I don't take any meds (besides birth control), and I have never had blood sugar issues. Incidentally, had a 2lb whoosh this am and I had this stuff for dinner last night. Of course, lots of other factors come into play, too: end of TOM, increased exercise for past 2 weeks...

10:25am after fasting all night (after arriving at work, so it's up a little) 104mg/dl

10:30 ate '10g carb' serving of Dreamfield's with butter, parmesan cheese, salt/pepper

11:00
138mg/dl

11:30
106mg/dl

It's a bigger rise in blood sugar than I expected. Last night I had the pasta with homemade marinara (very lc) and turkey meatballs. I may test later to see the results of that combination. I suspect the protein from the meatballs will dampen the blood sugar spike quite a bit.

Thanks, Tara!

I've got my eye out for some of this stuff to test as well. If I can just force myself to go to Walmart, I'm sure I'll find some and be able to contribute to the knowledge base.

Ok, one more blood sugar test with Dreamfield's -- this time I had a '10g carb' portion, with (5) 1" diameter turkey meatballs, about 1/4 cup homemade marinara, and parmesan cheese.
Here are the results:
1:55pm - b.s.g. = 106gmg/dl
2pm ate spaghetti and meatballs with marinara
2:45 - b.s.g. = 106mg/dl!!!!!!!! NO CHANGE!
3:15 - b.s.g. = 100mg/dl

As you can see, the addition of meat/protein really made a big difference. Fine with me, I love meatballs with my spaghetti!!

That IS interesting. Thanks for doing the two tests! I guess I'll have to do it a couple of ways, too. .... in the interest of science, of course.

I will not be doing two tests. My first was enough, thank you very much. Blank science. All times are PM

5:20 88
5:30 3 oz (dry weight) * Dreamfields linguini
6:30 156 (!)
7:00 143
7:30 131
8:00 117

70 points in one hour. I'll pass. I now think of this as "Pipe-dream Pasta" for me.

* (A "5 carb" serving is 2 oz dry. I cooked up 4 oz, thinking maybe I'd bring some leftovers for lunch. I prepared it a' la carbonara - with 3 slices of bacon, one egg and a sprinkle of garlic powder. Topped it off with a grinding of pepper and some freshly grated romano. I do the "full not stuffed" approach to portion control and, not feeling "full" after half of what I made, I went back for a bit more - less than half of what was left. That would have made a total of "7 gms" of carbs according to their estimation. ... I'll have my salad for breakfast.)
