Hi All. First post here. One question that I've been trying to find the answer to...

What do you do when your friends drag you to a Chinese restaurant? What do you eat? Seems like it's all non-lo-carb-ish...

Thanks in advance!

The Chinese joint we frequent has a salad bar in addition to everything else (it's a buffet-type place where it's "all you can eat" and you serve yourself), so I usually eat from the salad bar.

I've tried just eating the meats and veggies at the Chinese places, but have learned from past experience that they are "tainted" with sauces containing not only MSG, but corn starches and sugars galor, and I end up with a bloat gain of about 4 pounds from one meal, and get completely knocked out of ketosis.

My two cents...

Thanks for the reply April. Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. I can't think of what I'd eat at an Italian place either. Sushi is ok because you can have sashimi (no rice)...

Is there a guide to eating out anywhere other than the Atkins one? That one doesn't go into detail about all the types I'm interested in... I couldn't find an existing thread...

The clear soups as long s you don't eat the pasta nad meat are OK but high is sodium.. I love Won Ton and so far it hsan't given me any trouble--but I do drink extra water. I ordered a vegetable and chicken dish with hot sauce--least likely to be heavy on the sugar. Kon Pao Chicken is great--but some sugar in the sauce but mostly just the veggies and chicken with almonds in it. Sauce if ordered HOT contains the least sugar--but it is HOT! I asked which dishes had the least sugar at the local Chinese REstaurant we frequent. So at least this one doesn't use much sweetener in that sauce so I would guess that would be pretty much the same all over--but ask the server--or have them ask the cook! They will know and they are getting more adn more questions about hte cugar/sweetener content of their dishes. At least the one here is!

There are many restaurants now touting low carb menus (and some are endorsed with the Atkins logo). Some that come to mind just now are Ruby Tuesdays and TGIF.

I just came upon a site for finding low carb restaurants here. You may want to check that out. I tried it and it wouldn't work for me, however.

Ruby Tuesdays low carb menu can be found here.

TGIF's low carb menu can be found here.

Oh, and there's also an article hereabout eating Chinese and maintaining a low carb lifestyle, with a very informative link at the bottom about eating out (which you can access here).

Hope this helps.

I often eat the Egg Foo Young but hold the gravy and just use a bit of soy sauce. I always ask them to hold the msg.

Thanks, April!

What a bunch of helpful information!

That helps when trying to figure out where to suggest "we all go" out to eat!

At chinese restaurants, I have the clear tofu and seaweed soup or winter melon soup, anything with a clear broth. Tell them no corn starch. Steamed ginger and green scallion fish fillets is one of our favorite dish. Sometimes the mall take-out places have steamed veggies. I'll get a chicken bowl with just steamed veggies and get some sauce on the side if I need a bit of flavor. Chrispy chicken is a dish that doesn't have sauce. Or 1/2 roasted duck. You can ask for your veggie dishes with "very little sauce" or maybe even on the side. If you're a regular, they usually don't mind accomodating you. We even order crab with black bean but I say no sugar and no corn starch. They replied, "no taste." But it was still pretty good because it had some egg, pork and black bean.

Im also an egg fu yung girl I even got my bf hooked on it. Also steamed veggies and chicken or shrimp is yummy!

I eat the meat out of the potstickers too and the fried chicken wings (if they're not breaded)

I'm lucky because my local Chinese restaurant will make things "no sugar" if I ask for them. Granted, not quite as tasty as with sugar, but she seems to know what I mean when I tell her "no sugar". I try to stick with chicken and mushrooms, or a pepper steak...and I agree, the steamed veggies are good.
