Refeeding.....
Has anyone heard of this technique? I was browsing another "Low Carb" forum and there was a thread about refeeding. From what I read it seems as though to break a stall, you need to have a day or two of feeding on high carb foods, with the exception of Fructose. You also need to keep fat down to about 20 grams, some of the things they were talking about eating were pure sugar items, like jelly beans, sugarary sodas, pizzas, just about everything we should be staying away from. After doing the "refeed" you are suppose to go on strict induction until you lose the weight you gained, and then you will supposeably brake your stall, and start losing again. It sounds extreme to me and I certainly wouldn't try it myself. Just wondering if anyone else had heard of it, or tried it.

There have been a lot of discussions on this subject. It just doesn't sound like a good idea. Many people eat a higher number of legal carbs one day and fewer the next, which seems to accomplish the same thing without such a shock to the system.

I'm thinking it's just license to eat all the crap we are supposed to avoid in the first place.

I agree, I have had a weight loss after a day of eating more good carbs, so why would I want to pollute my system with a lot of sugar? I would much rather have a small sweetpotato than a whole bag of jellybeans! paladin

Agreed. If you are going to try to shock your system, do the shocking with good carbs.

Talking Re: Refeeding

I read about that on another board too. One lady's doctor (who was also on Atkins) told her to go home and eat some "real" chocolate one day and then cut way back on her carbs the next day & it would break her stall. It supposedly worked. So far, when I've gone for a while & not lost, I've upped my carbs with normal stuff & then cut way back to around 20-22 carbs for a couple of days and that seemed to work. Although, the chocolate would be nice.....! ha!

I have to chime in and say I do this about every 3 weeks or so and it does cause a weight loss. I ate cheesecake on Sat, and also drank 3 heinekins, and woke up the next morning 1.5 lbs lighter, Im still keeping the same weight. I dont know what it is, but it seems to work, as long as you dont overdo it. I'd much rather have a helping of rice then a chocolate sundae

This seems to be working for me too. When I stay at the same rate of carbs/calories - I end up in a stall. If I add something I normally wouldn't (crepes, daquiries) - for a day, and go back to normal it seems to help.

but, I have to avoid the breads/pastas due to the asthma, and the sweets cause I scared to death of having those cravings again.

so, its usually something just 'sorta' bad. I found this out on vacation. Never really went nuts, but had a couple strawberry daqs, and half a rack of bbq ribs (with lots of veggies) and lost 4 lbs over vacation - go figure.
so, been doing this since then, and have lost another 4.

Gosh.. I am jelouse... I have never cheated and lost weight the next morning. I am usually up 5lbs the morning after! Usually the way it works for me is later that week or the following week I will loose a couple of lbs. I know my weight loss has slowed down dramaticly. So this friday and saturday I ate a lot of LC food, and then yesterday I had some cheese cake (not the LC kind). So today.. I am up 7lbs! I have been pee'ing like a mad woman.. so I hope by the end of the week I can report at least an extra pound of weight loss. Though I am not holding my breath! LOL I think this method works for some, but not all people.

You guys are really tempting me to try to cheat for a meal...

Tanya is right though, this is not a good way to do healthy low carbing.

I've decided to give it a try, today I had lunch out and went to the dessert bar. I usually avoid it, but today I got a big piece of carrot cake , instead of just a bite or two, which is what I usually have off hubbys plate, I ate the whole thing. I weigh 121.5 today, I'll weigh in the morning and see what happens. that cake was delish, but It was hard to finish the whole piece. I don't think I will be doing that again for awhile.LOL

My personal trainer said that this would help me keep losing. However, since I've been not doing very well lately I should go back on Induction. But I have heard of this and I guess it does work for some people. I guess you wont know until you try it. But I would hate for anyone to try it and gain.

I wasn't endorsing 'cheating'. I have given up anything sugar based (ok, maybe once a week with a LC treat) and the breads. If I do go for a higher carb day, it is with a meal I still have control over. When I had a 1/2 rack of ribs, I made sure to have a double portion of brocolli with it (and still had some of the ribs leftover that the family finished). I don't advocate having cake or potatoes or bread, just something higher on the carb scale than the 30-40 carbs or less I try to stick to normally.
I'm just trying not to be obsessive anymore about the carbs. Try as I might, I had a lot of trouble getting above the induction level. I had to learn to relax a little bit. But - we all have to find what works for us.

Just wanted to add my two cents, I have been in a stall for almost a month. Last weekend I made a turkey dinner with tons of vegetables, and I added homemade mashed potatoes with cream and butter. I had about a cup of them. (they were oh soooo good.) Whithin the next couple of days my stall was broken and I was down 4 pounds... I don't know if it was a coincidence but if i stall again I will try it. I have to avoid sugary desserts at all costs.. any thing really that is made with sugar sends my cravings out of control.

Smile Re: Refeeding

Well, here it is the day after my carrot cake day. I have gained 0.5 pound, but I'm not supprised, I knew I would gain some fluid weight. I really expected to gain more, I have gained from 0.5 to 1.0 pound overnight before, and that was eating clean. My weight usually fluctuates up or down 0.5 to 1.5 pounds, so I can deal with 0.5 pound gain after eating an extra 75 grams of sugar and starch carbs. As I said, this was a little experiment and not something I would endorse for others to do. I have no craving whatsoever, I feel fine, my energy level is still up. So I think I passed the test, I'm eating clean today and will for the rest of the week. I have no doubt I will lose the water weight within the next few days. I have proven to myself that I can have a splurge occasionally since I am maintaining , and still stay in control of my eating. My next splurge will be something more nutritious.

I've noticed this happens too. Usually I have more problems LC'ing on the weekends, so I tend to either stall or gain back a little weight by monday. But if I'm good, the stall breaks and I lose more that expected.

It looks like a splurge on a high carb meal was just what I needed. I have lost the 0.5 pound that I gained on my high carb meal monday and I have also lost another 0.5 pound! I now weigh 121.0 pounds. :jumpgreen I have one more pound to reach my goal of 120.0 pounds. I think I will continue to have a high carb meal once a week, and then eat clean for the rest of the week and see what happens. Even Dr. Akins suggest doing a reversal diet to break a stall.

hmmm, this is all very interesting. i, too, experimented w/ this "theory" ... about 3 weeks ago (i had been LCing for 3 months at that time w/ NO cheats) i had a big slice of pizza. i did this intentionally - to see if it would break my stall.

nothing happened ... no loss, no gain. and i'm STILL at the same d*mn weight.
anyway, bottom line is i don't recommend doing this. if you're going to try to "shock" your system, i'd try eating a little more of the good LC stuff (if you're set on trying this).
it's a dangerous experiment ... proceed w/ caution!
