    Default Low carb and nursing?

Hey everyone.......I've been gone since about this time last year when I found out I was pregnant.....I now have a beautiful 3 month old son and am back to low carb living.

I checked with my pediatrician before going back to induction and he said a l/c diet wouldn't hurt the baby so I was free start anytime I wanted. I occasionally pump and my daughter will feed the baby breastmilk in a bottle because I was planning on returning to work and wanted to get him used to a bottle. One of the benefits of this is I get to see how much he's eating. At his 2 mos appt the Dr said his weight gain is fine, he's growing according to "normal". I commented that he's eating about 3 to 3.5 oz's per feeding and he's eating about every 3 hours, the Dr said he should be working his way up to 4 and even 5 oz's per feeding. I started l/c last week, today is the 1 week mark and I went all out and started in the induction phase and have kept it to 20 carbs or less a day.

Here's the problem/question. The baby seems hungry after nursing. He gets angry when the milk stops (I can tell by the swallowing pattern that he is not getting anything anymore). 2 weeks ago 3 times I was able to pump 4 oz's, over the course of the last week it's been decreasing to today I was only able to get a hair over 2 oz's. Anyone with experience with this? Is the l/c diet contributing to the decreased milk production?

    Any comments would be appreciated!!

    TIA

well i never had this experiance but maby you should have posted this in the womans fourm.. but from what i have read is you shouldnt be at induction phase when nurseing!
This may be the reason why your not produceing enough milk...you realy need to be giveing your baby the vitamins from fruit ect.. and you need a higher calorie intake due to nurseing.. good luck hope someone has better information for you..

    Nuffsaid,

That low a carb intake is not recommended for pregnant or nursing moms. Please read this article from the Atkins web site Pregnancy and Nursing

Great advice has been given so far!
Since this is a WOE that is diaretic then there is a good chance that lack of water/fluids could be the cause. IMHO I wouldn't be doing induction while pregnant or nursing.. maintaining would be best. Do you supplement him with regular formula?

No I don't supplement.... I've never needed to and don't want to. Remember this isn't a long term issue.....I just went through the first week of induction and towards the end of the week it started becoming a problem.

I've moved into maintenance levels now and it seems to be improving again. I'm not a COMPLETE idiot (although I feel like one), I did check with my pediatrician first ..... but to his credit I didn't say how low. Luckily it was only a week and I caught it right away. Hopefully it will work out quickly, in the meantime I do have frozen milk to give him if needed while I do everything I can to get my supply back up.

This is the first time in my life that I'm ashamed of myself for losing 7.5 lbs, I felt extremely guilty after I realized what I had done, that's why I posted here, I knew someone would know for certain.
    Thanks again!!
