Cool Wasting Away in Margaritaville...

Hi!

I am leaving to go to the Bahamas this Wednesday and will try my very best to maintain this WOE while down there. I go to a little secluded resort, so I'm not sure what kind of versatility I will have in my food and beverage selection.

Here's the question- what can I drink (meaning BOOZE)? I've gone there every year for the last 10 years and truly enjoy my Pina Colada or Strawberry Daquiri while on the beach. I also don't drink during the year, and try to "save up" all of my drinking fun for vacation. So, guys, can you give me some ideas? Off hand I would guess Rum and Diet Coke would be OK (but are all brands of rum OK)? I know there's some drinkers out there!

Thanks!
Regina

Have a great time, Regina! Don't obsess over the relative carb contents of brands of rum. Just have some! Bet they can mix it with Diet Coke, or any other no-carb mix of your choice. They make Diet Tonic, too. Even in an out-of-the-way resort, they must have heard of low-carb already!

A Pina Colada or two won't kill you, says I. And you'll be back on the wagon in every way once you get home.

Just back from Margaritaville myself (Key West) and can vouch for my own advice.

Most important thing? Major sunscreen and a hat! Have a great time.

When I went on my cruise, I did end up swaying from the WOE, but I did not drink those high sugar content drinks. If you go straight from this WOE and have a couple of those Pine coladas, I am afraid all the sugar will give you a bad hangover. I don't think you want to be feeling sick on your vaca.

I was happy with spiced rum and diet. If you really need a sweet cocktail try the coconut rum (I really don't know if this has allot of sugar) and unsweetened orange or pineapple juice.

You will have fun I am sure.

have FUN! i, too, am leaving for vacation this week! headed to CA ....

but i strongly agree w/ RKC on not drinking the sweet drinks. believe me, you're NOT going to feel very good the next day - 1) b/c you don't usually drink, you may have a real hangover, and 2) the large amounts of sugar will probably leave you w/ a carb hangover, too. :( boo.

when i indulge, i typically stick to vodka and soda water. tastes very lite - like a spritzer - especially refreshing w/ a squeezed lime. try some of the flavored vodkas. not sure about all their carb contents - but you'll be making a good decision by choosing soda water, diet tonic, diet 7 Up, diet Coke, etc.
HAVE A GREAT TIME! :silly:

If you have been on this WOE for quite some time---- BE CAREFUL, be very careful. You may find that you can easily be classified as a "cheap drunk". A little certainly goes a long way. Whatever liquor tolerance you may have had at one time will be much much lower now.

If you can get your hands on that new Diet Lime Coke - have that with rum - like a Cubra Libre (or whatever that is called) with no carbs!

I've become addicted to the DLC and here I was feeling all pious about not drinking any diet sodas any more - most of them are TOO SWEET but somehow this stuff is - well - it's GOOOD!

The flavored vodkas are also 0 carb, I really like the Stoli Raspberry, it's great on the rocks or as a spritzer with club soda. Again, that's a 0 carb cocktail.

I echo the sentiments of others - be careful, as low-carbing it will make you more sensitive to the effects of alcohol! And I would also avoid any sugary-based drinks, as they will make you feel like CRAP the next day - trust me on this one, I didn't do it with cocktails but was served a relatively low-sugar dessert which I ate - and I felt like CRAP! Now you don't want THAT on your vacation, right?! RIGHT! :silly:

Most of all - have fun!

I'm one for a simple Saphire and DietTonic, Scotch on the rocks, or plain old Tequila. There is a great website called www.cocktailtimes.com. If you scroll down to the bottom of the home page to the section called "Cocktail Party" You'll find a title called "Low-Carb Party" Now, these drinks aren't no-carb but if your looking for a change and looking to splurge it has a few drink recipes that are different from the normal ones.

I like Vanilla Stoli and Diet Coke! Also tastes like Vanilla Coke! In fact, I like it too much! Drank enough Friday night that when they ran out of Vanilla Stoli (!!!), I thought nothing of switching over to higher carb beverages! So my advice is don't drink enough to lose your willpower like I did! And HAVE FUN!

Thanks everyone for your help! I feel adequately armed to get appropriately tanked on my vacation (and it should only take one drink!) LOL.

I'll stick to plan, drink water poolside and save my alcohol for a little evening partying.

Cheers!
Regina

I'm back from my vacation and had a wonderful time! Thanks for all of your hints, tips, and advice. I actually found that I have a HIGHER tolerance to alcohol now that I'm eating low-carb. Before, one beer would set me back. But I was able to handle two glasses of wine, two MindErasers, and two SoCo (Southern Comfort) shots without getting sick, ill, or sloshed.

Plus, I only gained a half a pound the whole time. That could be because I exercised every day, but you still kind of always expect to put some xtra pounds on (especially with all of the alcohol!) Thanks guys!
