Default Scales of Terror

A warning for all those who are of the disposition to be egged on by a machine. . .
I shop at GNC quite a bit, as I despise having to go to WalMart. Since I'm right there in the mall 327 hours a week anyway, it's just easier. They have a scale there that sits in the lease line, and it has a sassy attitude. Every time I walk by it, or go near it, or sneer at it sideways from the other side of the hallway, it says "*beep* Have you checked your weight today?" I have been, for the last 8 months or so, assuring it that I HAVE checked my weight today, I check my weight every day, thanks for your concern, but I GOT THIS ONE. It takes some sort of glee in terrorizing me though, so every day it's the same thing. I've actually stopped answering it lately, just narrowing my eyes and wondering what sort of tool it would take to sever it from its power cord.
Today, as luck would have it, I was feeling snarky because I got on the scale this morning at home and had a little whoosh, now 4 pounds from my goal of 140. Woohoo! So when the GNC Scale of Terror sassed me today, I got out fifty cents, dropped my bag on the floor, got on the thing and said "Take THIS you nasty bundle of aftermarket electronics!"

You guys can see what's going to happen here, can't you?

Yes, the scale got the last laugh. . . at home this morning I was 144. On the Scale of Terror, I was 155. I actually swore out loud, and the poor girl working at the store came running out to the lease line, she thought I'd hurt myself.

I did, didn't I?

And I could have done without the assurance from the girl that they test the thing every day with a measured weight, and that it is perfectly accurate. I assured her right back that although I had just eaten lunch, and was fully clothed with shoes & all, that it was a LYING PIECE OF TIN that needed an immediate appointment with an industrial crushing machine.

DO NOT RESPOND WHEN BEING TAUNTED BY A TALKING SCALE!

Confound it. I went home and got directly on the scale that evidently LOVES ME, and I feel better now. If that scale was really accurate, does that mean. . .

Not thinking about it. Don't really want to know.

Well, of COURSE the GNC store claims their scales are accurate. What else better motivates people to march right into the store! Piffle. Pick the friendliest scale you can find (if you MUST weigh) and stick with it.

What a hilarious post! Thanks Stacie!

I've found that the scale at work is off too. And the one in the DR's office. And I'm not sure I want to think about it either.

But shoes really do weigh alot.

Piffle is precisely the word for this situation!
The lesson for me here is that regardless of what my actual weight might be (and we all know that it's 144) is that it doesn't change the number of pounds I've lost. If my sweet home scale is wrong now, it was probably wrong when I started, but the total would still be the same. How sorry now I am about the horrible things I've called my poor scale over the past year. . . I didn't know it cared.
Thanks for all your nice feedback, everyone. We all need a chuckle once in awhile, don't we? I do, however, prefer chuckles in which I'm not the butt of the joke! Oh well, if you can't laugh at yourself, it takes all the fun out of life.
