Default Peanuts or Cashews?

I spoke with the guy that takes care of the vending machines here at work asking him to get some almonds. As he couldn't get almonds he put in both cashews and peanuts. Cashews have higher carbs, but I think peanuts being more of a legume may be worse.

I am curious which would be a better low carb snack?

I don't like cashews, so I eat peanuts on occasion. And I don't have a problem with them at all. I eat maybe one serving twice a week, at the most. You could also ask the guy if they have the little package of one cheese stick and one pepperoni stick...I have seen that in vending machines before. At our office, we just have cashews, so I avoid the vending machine altogether.

road king,

when i first saw the topic... i said in my head "neither"

but i see your delema..... can you bring almonds from home?

I guess if I didnt have a choice other than those two -- i'd opt for the peanuts, and yes they are a legume... but less sugar and more fiber.

Cashews (whole roasted)- two tablespoons = 5.6 -.5 fiber = 5.1
Peanuts (oil roasted) - two tablesoons = 3.4-1.7 fiber =1.8

Looks like if you are going to munch on nuts - and you only have peanuts and cashews available, peanuts are the way to go

I can't really keep almonds at home because I eat too many so I stopped buying them.

Peanuts aren't that bad, especially if you are buying them in pre-measured bags. They have a very low glycemic index. Don't let the legume business worry you.

I work for a vending company and we sell Blue Diamond brand smoked almonds. I will look at the bag and see what the nutrition counts are. I personally detest almonds, and adding smoke flavor sounds even worse, but they sell like crazy. I've learned, over the years in this business, not to go by what I like, because I am definitely in the minority in alot of my "likes"! Peanuts aren't a bad choice, but I like to buy cans of macadamia nuts from WalMart for $4.88 and enjoy them a few at a time since they are a little pricey. I have gone so far as to buy walnuts, shelled sunflower seeds, peanuts, macadamias and pecans, mixed them up and made up little bags of nut mix. I had the carb counts figured out and everything, but I don't remember now what they were!

Cashews are also higher in sugar. And I "think" that they also are a legume. Goober peas are the best choice when a "real" nut isn't available. :jump:

How about pistachios? I buy these in enormous bags at Costco. Having to work at it a bit (prying off the shells one at a time) makes the snacking activity last longer.

Per 40 kernels (Fitday):
6.5 carbs minus 2.4 fiber = 4.1
(136 cals if you're interested)

That's a lot of munch. But, like other nuts, easy to get going and forget to stop. I count out my allotment.

I really couldn't find the facts but here:

http://www.rawpaleodiet.org/basics-g...started-1.html

the paleo diet considers cashews legumes also.
