I eat it. It's in season and sooo good!! Haven't noticed any weight change. Honestly on OWL, you should be able to incoporate moderate amounts of fruit. Check out the Atkins carb counter for more specifics.

The only thing I would say about watermelon is that is one of the highest GI fruits...up there with bananas and the like. Therefore, I would advise eating it in moderation. It's the only melon that strays from the "melons are low GI and lower carb" rule.

Not to cause confusion, but I thought even though watermelon has a high GI, it has a lower glycemic load. Someone who understands this better might want to make additional comment.

it is one of the fruits Dr. Atkins suggested eating occasionally--not o the seldom list, but not on the regularly list either--I go by the three lists in his book more than worrying about the glycemic index and load of foods--When I buy it we eat it in one to two days and thoroughly enjoy it then I don't buy it for a week or two again! I love it and could eat 5 lbs by myself--so I can't keep it around, but I would say eat it now and then, just not as a daily part of your diet--unless youa re working out a LOT or eating a LOT of carbs a day. It is a higher carb fruit--mostly sugar water! HEHE

I would still eat during OWL however make sure that you are working out. But, limit it because it is loaded in the natural sugars.
Good Luck!

Watermelon has a high glycemic index, but a low glycemic load. It is about 10 net gms for a cup's worth, a modest sized wedge. As a dessert after a BBQ, it's probably just fine. When I eat fruit, it's always after a meal, or with a piece of cheese or some cream. That slows down the rate at which it is absorbed and lessens its impact on the blood glucose levels.

I always allow myself most seasonal fruit - when it's in season and in moderate amounts - and have done so since I completed my two week induction.

I figure dieting is a way of life, and therefore, I plan on enjoying life. Splurging once in awhile keeps me on the plan. It would get so very boring if I ate exactly what was allowed for the rest of my life.. a little splurge once in awhile is a requirement for me.
