I have always thought about this question but, thought that it would be ludicrious for me to ask.
DOES TOOTHPASTE CONTAIN CARBS??
Yesterday I was reading my new issue of LOW CARB LIVING and there it was! I exclaimed! WOWOOOOOWOWOWWOW???!!! Someone else actually was anal enough to have the same thought and wonder!!

The answer:No! It is not an ingestible product, toothpastes are sweetened with xylirol, a natural calorie free sweetner made from birch trees. Most supermarket brands are sweetened with saccharin, which is also calorie free.

So there you have it! It you wondered...like me and were too afraid that everyone would think that you were a little obsessive about this program...which might very well be..your answer is brush...brush away and no worries.

I would think celeste that mouthwash and toothpaste go hand in hand.
Thanks for making me feel not so dumb! =]

You are cracking me up! But thank God it doesn't have carbs or I would be obsessing over how to avoid toothpaste carbs. Makes sense, though. Since carbs and sugar are so closely related, it wouldn't be cool to put SUGAR in something you're using to clean your teeth. That would add to cavities, not prevent them!

I noticed that before, that my toothpaste contains saccharine. A bit surprising at first, but if you think about it, they just want to make it paletable to people.

As long as they don't put in some type of actual sugar, I really have no problem with it.

That is interesting. Twenty year ago I went on a monitored Pshycians<sp> Weight loss program, that was basically a LC life style. One of the things that was verboten was "regular" toothpaste. I had to search the stores for "sugar-free" brand. Found that Pepsodent was the only one back in '84. The nurse told me at the time that even the sugar in toothpaste could effect ketosis.

My how times change.

Baking soda is about as natural as can be...they mine it out of the ground, you know. I used to live near a trona mine and was surprised that's where baking soda comes from. I just looked it up, and found this:

Virtually all baking soda in North America today comes from the mined mineral, trona, which can be found in large amounts in one place- GreenRiver, Wyoming.

There's a website with a lot of interesting facts about baking soda. Yeah, this is off track from toothpaste, but worth looking at:

I just want to warn you that your teeth need fluoride. Whenever the pH of your mouth decreases too far (i.e. too much acid), chlorine ions are physically pulled out of your teeth, basically leaving a bunch of atomic sized holes. This is how decay and cavities happen. Fluoride has the same charge, but is slightly smaller, making it a perfect fit to fill those holes.

Baking soda does absorb acid, but is not an adequate substitution for toothpaste.

Fluride is important. We found that out when we starting drinking water from bottle instead of the tap. Lot more canivites occurred and people realized that they needed to incorporate that back into their "diets".
Good point paladin! thanks
