Default HairLoss Question

I'm actually posting this for a friend who's doing Atkins quite successfully. She's noticed hairloss since doing this WOL and mentioned it to her doctor who blamed Atkins but didn't have an answer how to fix it or resolve it.

Any ideas?

I've heard this too, but can't help.

I'm interested to hear every one else's opinion.

my daughter had some hair loss a while back, so i looked up info on it. from what i gather, it can be caused by a myriad of things, from rapid weight loss to stress. with the stress, as i recall it tends to happen a few months after the stressful time.

for my daughter, she had been through a stressful time about 4-6 months prior. i suggested she lay off wearing the ball cap and maybe get a haircut. she did and the hairloss cleared up.

i've been dealing with the hair loss situation myself. I went to my doctor and she was very supportive of my new diet. She tested my thyroid to make sure everything was ok in that area. Even though the test came out o.k. She said that its probably from the stress the diet has put on my body. My doctor said that changing the way you eat drastically can have a stressful effect on your body. Even if the change is for the better. The hair loss will just need to take its course.

My co-worker (and Atkins partner) noticed hair loss after low carbing for 3-4 months. She talked to her doctor about it who suggested Vitamin B. She tried it and her hair loss was gone. She stopped taking the Vitamin B a few weeks ago and has started to notice her hair falling out again so she will start taking the Vitamin B again.

I mentioned to my aunt that I was having this problem and she said her dermatologist suggested she start using a shampoo that has protein in it. She said it worked for her. I haven't tried it yet but I am going too.

They are talking about a B complex. A good B complex should have each of the B vitamins. I personally take a 50 mg B complex daily (has 50 mg of most of the vitamins) in addition to my multivitamin.

I saw "ball cap' mentioned. Years ago I spoke with a gentleman who wore a ball cap all his life, and couldn't understand why he was bald. It seems the cap was the cause of it. I don't remember now the medical reasons behind it tho.

I had a huge problem with hair loss. I was worried so I went to 3 doctors lol. All three said it wasn't because I was on Atkins, it was because I lost weight and a lot of it. Apparently your body stresses out when we lose weight because it thinks we are starving and it has an affect on your hair and sometimes your nails as well. The bottom line was that your hair folicles form like 3 or 4 months ahead so whatever you do now to change that will not take affect for 3 to 4 months. (This is what the docs all told me). Sooo bottom line is that when your body adjusts to the fact that you are not starving to death the hair problem will resolve. It really freaked me out while it lasted though! I will say that biotin helped my nails and now I take the One a Day Carbsmart (that have extra biotin in them) and my nails are a world better! Whether or not it helped my hair I can't say because the time between starting the biotin and the improvement in my hair was months, but then again it would be. I hope all this babbling helped you some!
