I tried L-Carnitine and it was expensive and didn't do a thing for me.

Hi all,

Being a molecular biologist I can tell you that red meat and dairy products have enough L-carnitine to help your body convert fat into energy. L-carnitine is needed to release energy from fat. It transports fatty acids into mitochondria, the powerhouses of cells. L-Carnitine can be manufactured in the body provided the requisite vitamins and minerals are also present. These vitamins and minerals are B1, B6, C, and iron. The amino acids lysine and methionine are also needed for L-Carnitine synthesis. L-Carnitine is also present in meats and other animal foods, so if you are a vegetarian or vegan you may want to consider supplementing with L-Carnitine. I truly believe that because the Atkins way of eating, an increased amount of meats and dairy products, vastly contributes to the enhanced weight loss, since fat burning is fuelled by L-carnitine. You DO NOT need to supplement if you are eating your meat and dairy. Any excess L-carnitine is processed by the kidneys and excreted in urine. So basically you have really expensive "pee". Really the neutroceutical industry are preying off of people who are looking to reduce their weight via diets such as Atkins or South Beach by stating what L-carnitine does in the body. Most people think, "the more L-Carnitine that I consume, the more fat will burn away". Not true at all if you are eating your meat and dairy. Stay away from the supplements and eat a good variety of LC alternatives. Stay natural so you can maintain that way of eating for a lifetime. Hope this helps.

Cheers!

Krystyne, thank you so much for sharing your expertise on this matter. It can be pretty hard for us laymen to separate the BS from the voodoo in this world.

TEELBEE.....hey you...long time no see....miss your post and chit chatting with you....hope your doing fantastic....

Krystyne....a BIG thank you for your post cause THAT'S what I was looking for. Some that KNOWS what we should be taking and not like Howard said: They just made my wallet lighter!.... I'm not the type of person that likes to take any form of pills and wasnt sure on what I really needed....and thank god i dont have an expensive pee! LOL...Posts like yours sets people straight. Like I always said, before taking ANY form of pills, do your research...especially if you take pills that are made from chemicals and mixed with any natural pills....some DO NOT MIX...

Again thank you for your post and hopefully a lot of LC friends out there learned something. Also, if others knows their pills please feel free to help others out.

Merci,
Helene

L-glutamine...

It didn't help me at all. I didn't like the way it made me feel, either, so I eventually stopped using it.

There's another amino acid that they used to sell called L-Phenylalanine. That one will curb your appetite. L-Phen is a precursor for the body's various metanephrines, including ephedrine, so it shouldn't be that surprising. Unfortunately, if you take too much, it can raise your blood pressure and make you jumpy. I suppose it's not different or better than the other fat-burners out there, but it's worth knowing about.

Caffeine is my favorite drug of choice right now, particularly in it's freshly-brewed and steaming form, with or without cream and splenda. I was a caffeine-avoider for years. I recently broke my long self-induced caffeine-fast because of a new coffee maker that CRUSHED my resistance. I've become a total coffee addict. What is the result? Well, I've broken a long many-months stall, I'm losing weight at a decent clip again, and my ketostix are way out there in the dark purple. I've seen the light!

Pearson and Shaw had a diet book about 15 or 20 years ago that described studies done using different thermogenic agents, which includes all the xanthines, mild stimulants found in chocolate, coffee, and tea. The book said that thermogenics improved weight loss in lab rats versus control rats over their lifetime. It's hard to draw a firm conclusion from just that, though.

Anti-depressants can have a huge effect on sweet cravings, usually by INCREASING the cravings, although, some, for some people, can reduce sweet cravings. Some people say they feel fewer sweet cravings when taking Prozac. A number of people have tried to use that as a weight-loss tool, although that hasn't borne any substantial fruit in studies.

I remember that, for a while, there were articles abou MCT's, medium-chain-triglycerides, being effective in weight loss. MCTs are a type of fat. They used to sell it in bottles at health food stores, maybe they still do. I think one of the more prominent natural sources of MCTs was coconut oil. (All the coconut-freaks on here would know more about this than me, I'm sure.)

Doc - I love you. Reinforcing my total reliability on the hot steaming coffee that sits in front of me. I've had visions of nightmares.... someone tearing me away from it. Running...screaming at the top of the lungs to JUST give my Starbucks coffee cup and hot coffee back to me... Please Please Please.... all because everyone tells me I drink too much coffee. ;-)

I cut my caffienne way down - and guess what - I stalled, and started having cravings... apparently MY drug of choice on an Atkins healthy plan is coffee! ;-)

So drink up - I'm making some Breakfast Blend!
