She looked at me and said.. well you realy shouldnt be buying that stuff if you are trying LC.. as anger started to fill me of someone even saying something to me about my grocries... i waited for her to finish.. she went on saying you will never loose weight if you eat this stuff and LC stuff... when my fuse finaly was aloud to be blown.. i came back saying... Mam... I have been eating LC since jan 9th.. i have lost 45 lbs.. and still looseing the stuff you see in my cart is for my DH that weighs 145lbs.. and my children that only get it on speical occasions.. I also told her that i know alot about eating LC... it is not just my "diet.." it is my way of life... I said to her... i think it is rather rude of someone whom dont even know what im doing to make a comment to someone i nthe grocrie store... (this lady was also buying LC Items... such as candy bars shakes ect... i said to her.. well if your doing LC how much have you lost she goes i dont want to comment on that... well us liveing in a small town i have seen this lady around for some time.. and from what i noticed she hasnt lost anything if anything i think she gained... but that isnt the point... i was realy hurt by someone saying something to me in the store... as i was getting rdy to walk away from her i said to her.. those candy bars and shakes just lead to bad results for many people.. i told her she might want t otry eating more holsom foods.. i needa shirt that says .."Yes I'm LCing... NO i dont want your comments!" or something ... Has anyone else experianced comments while shopping?

| Well, Gilley, I have come across some strange looks from people and cashiers, when I have low carb tortillas and yoghurt, AND M&Ms and potato chips for dh in my cart. I ignore them. The fact that she saw fit to criticize you was rude, but ignore her, too. Who cares what she thinks? She pre-judged you without all the information, and her opinion really isn't worth getting hurt feelings over. Try to see things like that as opportunities to educate someone who maybe doesn't understand what lc is all about. I have struck up conversations with people in the grocery and HFS, when I see them looking at lc products. I usually just offer a comment like "Those bars will stall you, you know", and if they glare at me, I walk away. If they ask questions, I try to answer them the best I can, and give them the url to this site for more info. Most people are pretty receptive to advice, as long as you don't come off like a know-it-all or are critical of their choices. Just don't let her bother you.

| I have had good and bad encouters at the grocery store. The bad ones I just blow off... "Oh I see you are in to that LC crap..you know its just a rip off for stupid people...". I respond "Well, I'll just take my 35 lb lighter stupid self on down the aisle..." The good ones have been where I have been able to educate people to issues of hidden carbs and net carbs, etc. I still wonder when I see people ordering Michelob Ultra at bars while ordering a hamburger with "fries" (but I do not say anything...). ![]()

| that has often made me wonder at my work where im a cook.. we get people ordering burgers no bun.. then they get batter fried califlower... (they have batter on them..!) or order frenchfries... or this one person blew my mind they orderd our big burger no bun.. side salad, cottage cheese.. (all LC) then to drink had water... and the waitress knowing im liveing LC.. said to me.. "your never going to belive what that person orderd for desert. our cheese cake.. (not LC) so either they were not very well educated in LCing ... didnt know what actualy goes in Cheesecake... or... they were not LCING.. just small things amuse me..

| Now, now, folks.... these comments we make here are looking similar to some we get in grocery stores! We mustn't be too judgmental ourselves. I have learned from just 2.2 weeks in the low-carb business that there are many different kinds of low-carbers, and ANYONE with the sense to cut their carbs somewhere is doing a good thing for themselves. Just because someone orders LC foods doesn't mean that they're hardcore LCers in the OWL phase of Atkins... many folks are just trying their best to reduce the number of carbs and live healthier, and that should be commended. I'd much rather see a fellow get a bunless burger and breaded cauliflower than a 12" sub with chips and coke. We have people who have been LCing for a long time come in and buy bars and shakes by the box/case. Whether or not they are stalled by them is unknown, but they are better and happier than they were eating off the pizza buffet. I would imagine that if they didn't get any benefit from them, they wouldn't buy them. While I highly recommend people new to LC, or those with a lot to lose avoid them, I have been having them recently in more quantity and am still losing. I have begun to understand the importance of getting enough protein while LCing, and a decent bar can give you 20 to 30 grams in one go. I'd still rather have a piece of ham with come cream cheese in it, but as hectic as things have been, I don't have much time to prepare things like that anymore. One of the big things they stressed to us out in California was the difference between dieting and living. I brought up things like using fitday to log foods... "You're dieting, not living..." or measuring salad greens or other vegetables... "You're dieting, not living..." or the fact I have ZERO cheats yet... "You're dieting, not living..." You get the idea. Things like that. The whole point was when we remain super strict with ourselves, and our eating regimen becomes our obsession, we're doing something that will be unsustainable in the long haul, and we are doomed to fail. I had a manager from the local Curves in the store last week and she bought a couple of things from each section... cookies, crackers, pork rinds, candy, bars, soup, muffins, you name it, she bought a BIG variety. I said, "Trying a little of everything, are you?" and she replied, "Well, not exactly. I'm taking these to my classes and show them what all you have. And I want them to know they have somewhere to go to get things to reach for rather than cheating. In real life, you need a cookie now and then. Well, here it is. You need a cracker? Here it is." etc. etc. She said she'd prefer they all just eat their meat and veggies, but that wasn't a realistic view in the long run. I found her point of view enlightening.

| I believe that everyone may have their own reasons for the way they are eating and no should criticize anyone. The person having the LC carb beer might just like low calorie "taste-free" beer, the person having the cheesecake may just be trying to cut out starch. If they really want to learn this WOE the right way, then they ultimately will.

to me, food is a personal thing. for instance, my BF has a roommate that eats certain foods b/c of his religion/heritage, etc. the food he eats often repulses me (stinky), but i would NEVER comment on it. what he wants to eat is his personal choice. just like it is for us. so i don't think we should be quick to judge anyone b/c of what's on their tray in the lunchroom ... and i don't think anyone should offer opinions in the grocery store - unless someone asks for our help. LOL

| Oh, I do agree to.:great: It never bothers me when I see someone ordering a LC product (beer or otherwise) with a high carb product.. As long as people are ordering LC products there will be market for more LC products (hopefully...good ones). I guess what I meant was about the people who think that if they drink a LC beer or eat a LC bar they will lose weight automatically and then poo poo the WOE when they do not lose weight (I have run into many many people like this...).

| milkeyrat, i like your attitude! while i'm sure there are plenty of folks who do better with the regimen like april, the laid-back approach works better for me. but now i'm disappointed that nobody's to come up to me in the store, so i can tell 'em how much i've lost! i may even start to carry pictures for fun... |

| This is a very interesting thread. I do have a hard time with people who are judgemental about the LC lifestyle. I discovered the Carb Addicts diet three years ago and thus began my LC journey. I have done Atkins, South Beach etc all with some degree of success. I have found that to make this plan liveable I have to live a little. What I have found that is my biggest benefit from controlling my carbs is how I feel about myself. There are times when we are out to dinner and I have a perfect LC meal. I may have dessert that I split with my DH. I personally need to allow myself occassional indulgences. I do buy LC treats. I love the Carb Smart ice cream sandwiches |
