Just thought you'd appreciate this!

Question Re: Hey April...This one is for You!

I'm not April, but I just consumed a package of this stuff, spinach with a bright, flashy "low carb" label on front and back.

Sheesh! As if ANYONE who TRULY embraces LC would NOT know that spinach is cool - read the book.

Sorry, my gripe!

I want to add something, if I may. I think that these newly carb-aware labeling tactics are a double-edged sword. Good - for folks who do not have a clue about what is o.k. (although, shouldn't they READ a book first?); Bad - it's going to end up fooling people into thinking they're "doing low carb" if they eat a few low carb labeled foods per week, then they'll just pooh pooh about how low carb doesn't work.

Oh well, at least the people I am closest to know the TRUTH. Eat LOTS of veggies, drink LOTS of water, and eat healthy meats and dairy.

Yeah, it's the lack of carbs in our diet that's got us thinking unclearly.

i saw the express spinich with the low carb on the front..( i had bought it for months without the sticker)... all i could think was: if they dont know even the silliest things like SPINICH being low carb... they really shouldnt be doing the plan at ALL... not until they read up on it and do at least SOME checking into what they can and shouldnt have..*sigh*... makes me nuts when someone says they are doing ATKINS and then have no CLUE what it means to do that...*sigh*.. i hope for their sakes that they dont just go by the package or by advertising.. or even by listening to what someone ELSE is doing... geeeeeeeeeeze people.. take an hour or so out and READ about a low carb lifestyle... man..:-(

I guess I can see the benefit of this 'sticker'-ing. Many people are not going into the 'plans' but are just looking to cut down on the carbs. I think it is a good sign that people realize that controlling carbs can help their lifestyle.

I see these 'signs' as more of an assistance to those just trying to cut back a little, not following a specific diet plan. At least they aren't changing the food to make it low carb, just recognizing and advertising the fact that these foods are naturally low carb foods. And I think it is great that the vegetables are being recognized as such - instead of just the 'processed' foods getting away with calling things 'low-carb'.

I would like to see them marking these as 'naturally low carb' - which is a big difference than just the gimicky low carb foods (franken-foods). The more the vegetables are recognized, the quicker people will realize it isn't just meat and cheese.

How about the "Carb Well" Snack Well cookies? Have you seen these yet? Does anyone remember the controversy over the low-fat versions a few years back? Too damned funny. Make you think that the manufacturers think that most ppl are just cattle. :(

Hmmm. I had never thought of it in that light before.

You are precisely correct, Mary Kay.

I was just kidding about little stickers on green peppers and iceberg lettuce, but if it helps to point out that low carb is mostly vegetables, then I'm all for it!
