Before putting anything on the market here in Canada, they will wait for years to make sure all test were done...its always been like that here...to tell you the truth, its fine by me...after all, we are one of the healthest country in the world...i think we have more then enough on the market that should be off shelves...i believe a lot of people out there are taking too much of vitamins for nothing...for vitamin K you can get it as a perscription only...its a vitamin you have to be careful when you take it.

Example: Too much vitamin K may interfere with the effects of blood-thinning medications, such as warfarin (Coumadin) and heparin. If you are taking one of these medications, it is wise to moderate your intake of foods that are rich in vitamin K...

Possible Interactions: If you are currently being treated with any of the following medications, you should not take vitamin K without first talking to your healthcare provider.

Antibiotics: Antibiotics, particularly a class known as cephalosporins, reduce the absorption of vitamin K. Extended use of antibiotics may result in vitamin K deficiency because these drugs kill not only harmful bacteria, but also beneficial, vitamin K-activating bacteria. This is particularly a problem for people who already have low levels of vitamin K or are at risk for deficiency (such as those who are malnourished, elderly, or taking warfarin).

Doxorubicin: Preliminary evidence suggests that vitamin K3 (a synthetic form of vitamin K) may enhance the chemotherapeutic effects of doxorubicin. However, these results have not yet been demonstrated in people. There is also some concern that vitamin K3 causes severe anemia in people. More research is needed to assess if this synthetic form of vitamin K is safe and useful.

Phenytoin:Phenytoin interferes with the body's ability to use vitamin K. Taking
nticonvulsants (such as phenytoin) during pregnancy or while breastfeeding may deplete vitamin K in newborns.

Warfarin: Vitamin K reduces the effects of the blood-thinning medication warfarin, rendering the medication ineffective. Vitamin K should not be taken while taking warfarin, and foods containing high amounts of vitamin K should be avoided.

Weight Loss Products: Orlistat, a medication used for weight loss and olestra, a substance added to certain food products, are both intended to bind to fat and prevent the absorption of fat and the associated calories. Because of their effects on fat, orlistat and olestra may also prevent the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamin K. Given this concern and possibility, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) now requires that vitamin K and other fat soluble vitamins (namely, A, D, and E) be added to food products containing olestra. How well vitamin K from such food products is absorbed and used by the body is not clear. In addition, physicians who prescribe orlistat add a multivitamin with fat soluble vitamins to the regimen.

The possibility of olestra or orlistat interfering with vitamin K absorption is particularly important to know if you already have a vitamin K deficiency (such as with malnourishment or poor fat absorption from cystic fibrosis) or if you have a tendency to bleed (includign if you take the blood thinner warfarin). On the other hand, the fact that vitamin K is now added to olestra-containing food products is also significant if you should not be taking vitamin K (again, for example, if you are on the blood thinner warfarin or you have a G6PD deficiency).

X-rays and Radiation: X-rays and radiation can deplete vitamin K levels and raise vitamin K requirements.

Each of the following may diminish vitamin K absorption and lead to reduced levels in the body:

Aspirin
Cholestyramine, one of a class of medications known as bile acid sequestrants used to lower cholesterol
Mineral oil laxatives

So do you really need it if your eating properly?

The best foods for vitamin K: Much of the vitamin K you need comes from ?friendly? bacteria that live in your intestines. You can get the rest from a variety of foods. The best food sources are romaine lettuce, spinach, kale and other leafy green vegetables; broccoli; cabbage; green peas; brussels sprouts; and beef liver. There is also some vitamin K found in plant oils, such as soybean, canola and olive oils, as well as in egg yolks and dairy products. Here are some dietary sources of vitamin K.

1/2 cup (125 mL) boiled spinach - 360 mcg
1/2 cup (125 mL) boiled broccoli - 113 mcg
2/3 cup (150 mL) boiled cabbage - 98 mcg
1 tbsp (15 mL) soybean oil - 26 mcg
1/2 cup (125 mL) boiled green peas - 23 mcg
1 tbsp (15 mL) canola oil - 20 mcg

Precautions:Because of the potential for side effects and interactions with medications, dietary supplements should be taken only under the supervision of a knowledgeable healthcare provider.

Vitamin K crosses the placenta and is also excreted in breast milk. Therefore, pregnant women and women who are breast-feeding should consult a healthcare provider before taking vitamin K supplements.

Those with an unusual metabolic condition called Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency should avoid vitamin K. Those with G6PD deficiency experience a serious breakdown of red blood cells (called hemolysis) when exposed to certain infections or medications, including vitamin K.

Basically, eat fresh and you will do just fine.

hope this answered your question Barb...sorry if it was long...

Oh Helene, how informative!!!! Thank you for all of that!!!

Ya know, I think it's really interesting how these man-made (i.e. drugs) substances interfere with a lot of natural bodily functions. While I realize drugs can be life-saving, I am a purist at heart and prefer to heal my body naturally. It would be interesting if the FDA, the AMA and the ADA would figure out how we are killing ourselves slowly with the messed up diets we now have. This just makes me feel even better about the way I am eating..........naturally (mostly) and how when we eat a lot of human-altered foods, it wreaks havoc with our bodies.

I think the US FDA USED to be extremely nit-picky about what goes out on the market, but they have relaxed it a lot. However, a lot of things that get approved here in the states is cost driven, with the drug companies getting things pushed through sooner than they should be. (one of my many gripes.)

I don't know if you all get the drug ads on television like we do here in the states, but it's actually kind of comical how they have some sweet sounding voice listing all the side-effects, making them sound like it's nothing. They drive me nuts.

Your post was really interesting, Lanny. I read up on Vitamin K a while back, when one of my restaurant customers started asking for a special salad.

He had just had by-pass surgery, and was told not to eat leafy greens. He was taking blood-thinners, and the Vitamin K was dangerous to him. He could eat steak, and things like Veal Picatta and Chicken Marsala, but instead of salad and regular veggies I made him sliced tomatoes and red onions with vinaigrette dressing. I expected having to make low-fat entrees, but no; it was the SALAD he had to cut out of his diet.

And I know what you mean about the drug commercials, Barb. They amaze me. I mean, you take something so you won't sneeze, and "some side-effects may include" cramping, headaches, sleeplessness, bleeding, etc. I'd rather sneeze, thanks.

I have been using Erythinol for 2 years and purchasing it from Netrition.com. They no longer have it. Does anybody have any idea where I can order this online?
Thanks,
mj

Welcome, mj.

Do you mean erythritol? The sweetener? (I ask this, because I've sometimes seen people call it erythrinol.)

If so, netrition still carries it same as usual.

If not, what's erythrinol?
