Default Whole Soybean Pasta

I thought I would share with you what is, for me, a recent and pleasant discovery.

If you've been around a while, you might recall that Dreamfield Pasta is not an option for me. It jacks up my blood sugar in a way that is closer to the actual carb count than the claimed "net impact" carbs. I was so disappointed, I dubbed it "Pipedream Pasta."

As for the shiritake ... well, I just don't like it. It's completely non-absorbant and I hate that fishy smell when I open the bag before I rinse it off. It just doesn't float my boat.

A few weeks ago I purchased some Whole Soybean Pasta made by Nutrition Kitchen. I tried the one made from golden soybeans. They also have one made from black and one made from green. I'm going to try them because I was pleased with the golden ones. The ONLY ingredient in all three is soybeans and currently, the only style is angel hair ... which is fine with me, LOL!

1/4 of a package (same size as any angel hair pasta in boxed form) has 200 calories and 22 gms of carbs (of which 11 are fiber) leaving a net carb count of 11. This is a generous serving. Half of a serving makes a very nice "side dish" - like with some shrimp scampi, or something.

You cook it just like traditional pasta, but it helps to add a little oil to the cooking water because it foams some. While cooking, I found no unpleasant odor as I have found with some other soy based pastas. Cooked as directed, it neither falls apart nor turns to rubber - again something I've found with soy based pastas I've tried over the years. But I've never seen one where soybeans are the ONLY ingredient.

When cooked he texture is not identical to regular pasta, but it is very acceptable to me. It reminds me of some of the whole grain pastas I tried prior to my lc days. It is slightly absorbent and holds on to whatever topping you're using. I've had it alfredo, with scampi sauce, with meatballs & homemade sauce, and with just melted butter/salt/pepper/grated cheese.

I find that this is just as "friendly" to my BGL's as soybeans are - an ok food for me.

(PS: For those with gluten intolerance, this is a totally gluten free product made in a gluten-free facility.)

wow,
thanks for the heads up Maggie! From your review, this pasta sounds like something I also would like.(despite not being to much of a soy fan!)

When I purchased my blood sugar meter, my first test was about 1 hr after eating Dreamfields. It was cooked barely 10 minutes and served immediately. My meter read 160. Yikes. Pipedreams it is.

I'm avoiding soy, cuz we didn't evolve eating soy. But, I dunno - do I want to be a total bore? Oh soy what. Maybe I'll give it a try. Thanks for the tip lady, and again, thanks again cuz you were the first to warn me my glucose levels should be watched. Now I watch them go up and up. Grrrr.

I found them on-line at netrition. I haven't seen them locally, but on the other hand, I'm not a great shopper ... 'cept when I'm sitting at my computer, LOL!

Just a quick update to this thread:

I've tried all three varieties, now, and there's no detectable difference in taste between them. Nice, neutral and mild.

As for appearance, the golden certainly resembles traditional pasta and the green looks like a spinach pasta. The black, well, not that pretty. It comes out sort of grayish and looks like a plate of worms to me. Tastes fine, but the look put me off.

I had the green the other day and that seems to work great with a little pesto, drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and some grated cheese and fresh ground pepper on top.

BTW, I stopped with adding the oil to the cooking water, just switched to a larger pot. The foam goes down a couple of minutes into cooking.

I had this for dinner last night and was very pleased with the result. I didn't realize how much i missed angel hair pasta. And the 2 ounce raw weight serving seemed much larger than other low carb pastas I've had for the same weight.

i gave this a try tonight with some chicken alfredo. tastes pretty good! the texture reminded me of ramen noodles from the old days when i was younger, poorer, and ate much higher carb.

Well, as I mentioned in another thread, my "adoption" of a low carb product is often the kiss of death. This product has been discontinued and no longer appears to be in stock in the places where I'd found it in the past. :(

As with the Hershey's 1 carb bars (still have a few in my downstairs freezer ) I've scarffed up as many as I could find and will have some for the near future. Maybe in the meantime someone else will take up this product or something similar.

It's a shame Maggie. I'm down to a box and a half of this product. It could be me who is the kiss of death since I also used to love 1 carb bars.

... and here I thought it was me! Actually, this is true of me with many items. Shoes, clothing, makeup, etc. I just have a penchant for loser products.
