Default Do antidepressants affect weight loss?

Hi,

I take antidepressants and am wondering if they affect weightloss? I remember reading somewhere that they do but I'm still unsure. I gained a substantial amount of weight while taking Avanza (an antidepressant) without changing my eating habits. Is anyone else taking antidepressants and experiencing problems with weightloss?

xo

Hi Becka!

I take 20mg of Paxil daily. When I was losing weight, I lost pretty steadily. Of course, every one is different.

I haven't been actively low carbing for quite a while , but I couldn't say that my meds caused any problems with losing weight (the SUGAR is what is causing my problems now...grrr...)

Hi Becka,
Welcome to LCE!
Usually antidepressants will make a person gain weight. The cause is not known exactly, but some think being depressed causes loss of appetite, and when one is feeling better, with improved mood, etc. DUE to the meds, then the appetite increases, and can cause the scales to go up.

Above all, talk to your physician regarding your meds if you have concerns. Never, never cease meds without your Dr's approval, of course.

Low Carb is the best thing to do while having to take antidepressents because many of them cause weight gain because they give you the munchies. When I was on the most meds I could lose weight w/LC but if I stopped low carb look out, I wanted Sugar and Pizza.
