| Donna - I had trouble with Aunt Flo staying for weeks at a time. I had endometrial ablation sp? and it has done the trick. For some periods are eliminated but for me they are 2 days long and very light.

| hi there! i too have had problems with my periods for years...well since they started when i was 12. i'm gona be 25 in jan, and i have just found out 2 weeks ago what the hell has been going on with my body (2 or 3 periods a year, which usually last a day at a time, thats it.very heavy bleed, when i bleed for longer, super plus tamons do not suffice. had one period a few years ago where i bled for 1 month 1 week very heavy, became very aneamic. was given tablets by hospital to stop bleed. took 2 weeks for tablets to work... i was 21 at the time!) Anyway have found out that i have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, and have been given a diabetic drug, Metformin, to help me. I have found i am insulin resistant (all part of the PCOS thing), and the only way i can possibly have at loosing weight is by taking the Metformin and following a low carb diet!!! so here i go!!!! if the doctors had listened to me in the first place, i would have known for sure a lot sooner and been able to control the effects it has had on my life a lot sooner i'm sure :( But anyway..... i'll digress from that what i wanted to say is, do yourself the biggest favour and make sure they check out every avenue before they rule it down to one thing perhaps to quickly. I have had ultrasounds and blood test after blood test to find out my condition. My faith in the medical world has now rather deminished as even when dr's do find out what the problem is, they do not seem to understand how worrying it is for the patient to not have things explained to them (properly) or they are not offered any options on what they, the patient would like to do (i find with UK dr's anyway, and many others i have recently spoken to in PCOS forums/chats have said the same sadly). I'm glad for you that your dr seems to have given you some form of explanation, but i am interested to know.... do you think he has made the right diagnoses for you? I had to basically TELL my dr's that i had PCOS before any tests had been done........because i wasn't TTC they weren't bothered about finding out if i had problems down there......... so i had to say i was TTC for over a year to get tested and to find out that i have this disorder that has so badly damaged parts of my life (weight, migranes, depression, mood swings, now insulin resistance needing daily self blood glucose testing and Metformin e/d, with BMI of 37/15 stone at age 25). Sorry to babble on!!!!! I just feel that many women in the world are not being given the help they need by the medical profession. I wish you all the luck in the world with everything. Hope to hear how everything gets on with you in the future. Take Care Emz69 :bellydanc |

| I too have played that game with the medical profession--I got my diagnosis after about 8 years of messing around and about 15 years of wondering and two miscarriages. I have one healthy normal daughter. . .which is what put my doctor to looking for the problem. I bled last year from Thanksgiving to Valentines Day non-stop. I put up with it because I knew what they were going to do and I can't stop every 30 minutes travelling then it took forever to get in for an appointment. DH and I are hoping to get pregnant this spring. I have lost 70 lbs so far and am back in an almost normal range for weight. I am no longer at risk of gaining 30 lbs and being up in the 200s again. I managed to avoid Metformin--but only becauseI was successful losing on Atkins--if I had not been I would have had to take it as well. My periods are still not as regular as when I was a teen but theya re about 5 days long and the cycle is around 35-40 days long so closer than 3 a year that who knew--I may have one in Jan and Feb then not til August or everytother month or whatever!

| I don?t have a problem like yours but a friend of mine has. She has PCOS and their periods was always a mess. After 3 months on atkins the periods are back and her doctor says her ovaries are working again. She was taking metformin too... but now I?m not sure. Seems like your body is perfect now. What diet plan you are doing?

| I never heard of PCOS until I started reading this forum. There seems to be quite a few cases among our posters on this board. I've not done any research, but what I've gathered here it seems that periods, weight gain, insulin resistance and fertility are all tied together with this disease. I find it rather disturbing that today's doctors don't seem to be catching on...at least not from what I've been reading on these boards. My cycles are slightly erratic...28 days, 33 days, 42 days. To be honest, I've not paid much attention that past few years. I mean, it's not as if I'm worried that a missed cycle will mean a baby is on the way. That would be nothing short of a miracle these days. I've more or less chalked it up to pre-menopausal stuff. Maybe I should start keeping closer watch just so I can be more informed about my body. BTW...I can't help but think about poor Rob as he's reading these posts. If he's like many men, he probably squirms uncomfortably as he's reading about all our female ails. LOL

| donna- i'm almost wondering if your weight loss is kicking you back into having cycles? i dunno, though. i am SO not an expert on this. but i know that weight does affect 'em. mine are getting a bit less stable/predictable, but i figured it was 'cause i'm approaching 40. my mom went through the change in her early/mid forties. |

I have had one and they basically fill the uterous with hot water so that it burns off the endometrial stripe. (Keep in mind that this is layman's terms.) The goal is to reduce bleeding. Alot of women blow off a heavy flow saying it will go away and my doc chewed me out for this very thing. Kinda scared me with the gloom and doom speach he gave. He said I was bleeding too much for too long for it to be normal and it should be treated to prevent further complications. Just my story..... Yes, I too have been irregular for many years. PM me and I will tell you the whole story if you are interested. I too am surprised that the medical community has not made further connections to weight gain, PCOS, thyroid problems........But it may be a chicken and egg thing. Who is to say which came first? Just my 2 cents. LevisMom

| Donna, I went off the pill after about 8 years of using it and had very irregular cycles. (Like 3 in a year and a half). Then I went on Atkins, lost 15 pounds, had a regular cycle and got pregnant. (A good thing, because we were trying). I have to second what goddess said... if you don't have PCOS, it may be because of the weightloss and re-regulation of your blood sugar and hormones. I am certain that's what happened to me.
