I was reading something about losing weight while nursing. Sorry I can't remember the article. I've read so many! But the author warned that losing more than a pound a week could lead to toxins in breastmilk that could be harmful to nursing babies.

What toxins?! It didn't say. It was just that ONE ambiguous sentence. Are they talking about ketones or something else? Has anyone else ever heard of that? TIA

I can't address that, but Dr. A did say to avoid being in ketosis while preg. or bf.

As our fat cells shrink, they do release a whole lot of garbage...

Is that what you were wondering???

Sharron. Yes. You're probably right about it just being the massive amounts of funk that we have stored in our bodies already. The article wasn't talking about low-carb diets in particular, just pregnant-nursing mothers losing weight in general.

Well... this is something I've had to deal with before (and I guess I'll be dealing with again) and this is my take on it:
(for what it's worth )

Yes, when we lose weight, our cells release a lot of *junk*. This is true when we exercise and when we detox as well. But I think one can get in trouble obsessing over this...
I would never do a *detox* (like Master Cleanse) while nursing, but eating healthy and losing weight at a reasonable rate does not worry me. One thing I have learned from all the detox & natural healing books I have read is that you can almost *choose* how your body rids itself of toxins.
I know I am always pushing the water thing, but here -- again -- drinking adequate water alleviates some of the problem.

The way I understand it, those toxins will leave your body in the *easiest, and fastest* way available to them. If you are drinking ample water, you will excrete them in your urine, primarily. If not, they will work their way out through your breath and your skin.
Granted, nursing is a little trickier because it is another fluid, but I would bet that the increased water intake would dilute any trace toxins that *might* (and this whole idea is still very debatable) enter the breast milk.

Personally, I would just take the weightloss slowly (no crash diets, obviously) and I would drink ample water to keep my system flushed out. I would also use other means of ridding my body of the toxins in hopes of detouring them from my milk... things like alternating hot and cold water in a shower, and working up a good sweat through exercise.

I don't have the *answer*, but that's what I am planning to do.
HTH,

Summer

Summer:

I realize a lot of the problem with dieting and breastfeeding is just that there's no research to support healthcare providers recommending it. People aren't exactly sure what will happen, and no one wants that liability.

However... being at least 60 pounds overweight myself, I really can't believe that losing a few pounds is going to do me or the baby any harm. LOL

Well congrats darlin!!! Is this your first? I love babies. My kids are getting so big so fast. I have 3, Christina-10, Courtney-8, and my baby boy Zachary-4.
My mom said to me when Chris was born that I would blink my eyes and she'd be grown. I am in mid blink!

Keep us posted on how your doing. Oh BTW do you know if it is a boy or girl? I always had to know as soon as the ultrasound could tell. I hate suprises!
