ok I am probably reveiling a bit too much about my dieting but I dont know anyone here in real life so at least im not too embarrassed.

I use the contraceptive rod in my arm, and since I got that put in just over a year ago I havent had my periods. That suited me fine, the docter said that may happen.

But since I started this low carbohydrate diet they have come back, and they stay for AGES. I am currently in my 11th day and its driving me insane.

My mother is also on the diet and she her periods are alot more painful now that she is on the diet. She gets more cramps.

Has anyone else had their menstrual cycle messed up because of the diet?

Kaz, you may not have noticed, but we have a special forum for women's issues. I'm sure someone will be able to give you some insight on your situation. I will move your thread over there so it will be better recognized.

As always, please consult your physician regarding such problems.

I was watching tv this morning and that subject was brought up. Some doctor said that the high fat ,low carb diets seemed to make periods more painful. (something like that)

New link, since our revered webmistress is very against even potential copyright violations. Problem with the previous link was that somehow a hard line break got into it. (I hope.)

Barnard is a member of the aggressively vegetarian and anti-lowcarb PCRM, so take this article with a grain or three of salt. You'll notice that no actual research is cited to support Barnard's claims. See the other links in the News forum for more info on the PCRM.

There has been some suggestion that estrogen can actually be stored in body fat. You start to lose the fat, the estrogen gets released = hormones all out of whack for a while. I strongly endorse the earlier advice to see your doctor.

Many messages on the old women's forum related success in overcoming PCOS and PMS with a low-carb diet. Any sudden dietary change, I think, is likely to throw your body for a loop for a while, but the majority of posts I remember indicated that PMS and menstrual symptoms actually diminished after adaptation to low-carb.

You don't say how old you are, but this pattern of no periods and then heavy periods sounds rather like perimenopause. Perimenopause can last for several years.

During my perimenopause, I would have no periods or light periods for months or even a year, then I'd have very heavy periods every 2 1/2 to 3 weeks for a few months. The two gynos I consulted both insisted this was "normal". Doesn't feel a bit normal, but I guess it is part of the maturation process.

Actually, a lot of us have had this problem of changes to menstruation when starting this WOE. I think for most it usually subsides after a few months. If it doesn't, go back to your doctor and see what he says because it could be your body getting accustomed to the hormones in the birth control.

I've had just the opposite effect on me with this WOE...I didn't even have breast tenderness which I have always had the entire week prior to starting TOM. I usually have to take Midol everyday for 2 weeks straight...not anymore!!!

My periods have started to become very painful over the last 2 years. I just turned 44. I started Atkins on January 6, 2003. My periods are very regular, but even more painful. The doctor did a sonogram in July. They found no fibroids or anything else that wasn't suppose to be there. Praise the Lord!
The doc has suggested birth control pills. I'm afraid to try those due to possible weight gain. I've tried a natural progesterone cream for three months. It didn't bring relief. The only thing I take that can allow me to be functional while on my 5 to 6 day period is percocet and ibuprofen.
The next suggestion is going to a gyn and having some kind of scope with a scraper on it to see what's going on in my uterus....AUGH!!!
I'm gonna have to do something. The pain is similar to giving birth. I was dilated to an 8 when I got to the hospital with my youngest. The pains I've been having lately are close to that level.....
I'm sorry...this is really getting long...and it doesn't really help you....!!!
ANYWAY....Atkins hasn't had an affect on my regularity...
Hang in there....

For me I have had the opposite reaction from my periods. Excluding the ovarian cyst problem I am having presently, my periods have been LESS painful, shorter, and (thank god) with less mood swings. Is there anyone that has had an improvement out there?

Just wanted to say (and this is a totally uneducated opinion) that some of you who are having extra long periods should see a Doc to be on the safe side. This could possibly be caused by another problem.

As for me, along with the rest of my misfunctioning body, I don't even have a period. I had like 5 since the birth of my youngest who is now 15, and those 5 were brought on by prescriptions when I was in the "I have to fix this" mode and seeing docs. I'm only 36 now. So this has been going on since I was 21.

The reason I suggest getting everything checked out is because my friend started having these long periods, and she was suffering miserably after about the 4th one with a myriad of other symptoms, but she didn't seek help until she got really bad off. She ended up having to have a hysterectomy (sp?) She told me before the name of the condition she had, and that had she caught it sooner, she wouldn't have had to go through that. My apologies for forgetting what it was called.

Some of you might wish you were in my shoes, not having to deal with the monthly bourdon.. but this malfunction has prevented us from having another child (when we were younger and really wanted another), so while it's a relief some days, other days I spend wishing I was normal and wondering why I'm not.

Just Believe.

I have experienced some of the same problems.
I am on the pill, and still my body has given me issues for the two months I have been doing Atkins.
The first month it came a week early during week three and was gone when it should be there the fourth week.
The second month, it wanted to come a week early in week three, but only spotted. But then when it should have come the fourth week, it only spotted as well.
I figure that it should work itself out this month, the third month I am LCing. We will have to see.

Not gonna quit!
