If Not Now...When?

New Year's Hat

LCE is pleased to welcome Guest Author, Kate Street.

Another year has come to a close. How did you do? Did you finally lose that extra weight? Did you estatically go shopping for smaller sizes? Did you actually live up to your promises of keeping the weight off this time?

Holiday Splurging

Noisemaker

Splurging. I could write a book about it. I'm the queen of splurge! In the past, I could always find a reason to eat something I know I shouldn't. Everything from a vacation in a far off land to catching green lights all the way home; all were fodder for celebration.

I've gotten a little better over the years since beginning my low carb woe. I'm not perfect, by any means, but I have made much progress. These days, I try to limit my splurges to truly worthy occasions rather than impulse buys at the fresh, hot bread rack.

Have I done something wrong if my weight loss seems to have stopped?

Most likely not. Of course you should take a good look at what sort of things you have decided to add to your menu following induction. It is very common, however to have several “plateaus” (stalls) along the way. It is almost as if your body is going through an adjustment to each new weight level. May folks report that they will level off for a while and then, several days later, might drop a couple of pounds. Remember, what counts is the long term trend in your weight.

Can I start or continue low carbing if I’m pregnant or nursing?

Yes, but it is not recommended that women who are pregnant or nursing restrict their carb intake to the point of ketosis. There have not been sufficient studies done to prove that is completely safe for the baby. It is generally advised that you reduce your consumption of sugar and white flour, as well as leaving behind junk food and soda. Choose lower glycemic fruits and veggies, but don’t avoid either food group. It’s a good idea to consult with your health care provider to discuss your thoughts on this issue.
