Help with Food Costs

Many people new to low carbing worry about increased grocery expenses. While some food costs go down (brown-bagging it is cheaper than fast food, for example, and you won't need to stock up on junk food any more), quality meats and fresh veggies can add to your food costs. And with the economy being a big ugly mess at the moment, people are understandably cautious about spending.

A resource I ran accross recently could help: Angel Food Ministries.

Their mission: "Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit, non-denominational organization dedicated to providing food relief and contributing to benevolent outreaches in communities throughout the United States."

Angel Food Ministries provides approximately $65 worth of food each month for $30. The monthly menus are preset, and do seem to include a few items that wouldn't be of interest to low carbers. However, folks can donate back what they don't need, and have the option to order addtional packages at discount rates, including meat-only packages. Items are ordered through host sites, including churches, civic groups, schools and community centers througout the United States. The food is not old, expired, or otherwise inferior. The discounts are available because of the large quantities ordered through the organization.

Best of all, there are NO qualification requirements. Anyone who is interested can participate. They even accept food stamps in payment. I would encouarge anyone who is interested in stretching their food budget to take a look. And if you know someone who may be struggling with their food costs, please let them know about this resource!
